On occassion, we like to shoot a bit of film. Let's be clear, we're talking photographs, not video... on that old acetate-y stuff! With us? Why? It's just so incredibly beautiful and detailed and offers a look that is completely unmatched by digital. We shoot weddings on our 1959 Rolleiflex, a beautiful machine in it's own right. We use this camera for all our own personal photos as well (see our photos from our own elopement wedding earlier this year). We never shoot digital at home or on our travels, just our Rolleiflex and some medium format film.
We thought we'd put together just a few favourites from weddings shot on medium format film over the summer of 2017. We like to shoot just one of two rolls during portraits as the trade-off for the extra quality is that it takes a little more time - but it's worth it! And lastly, a bit of a curve-ball. In the photo of Anna & Will above, Anna holds her great-grandfather's camera, a ca. 1930s Rolleicord. She asked if we could take a look at it on the morning of her wedding as she had no idea if it worked or not. We were only too happy to oblige! On inspection, James found a half-shot roll of film inside which we estimated to be from the mid-1980s to early-1990s. We immediately sent it off to Canada to be processed by the wizards at Canadian Film Lab. Unfortunately, despite everyone's best efforts, there were no discernible images left on the roll. It was definitely worth a try though.
However, the story doesn't stop there! We put in a brand-new roll into great-granddad's camera after James determined it at least had operational basic functions. A bit of a learning curve getting tested us as we found all it's little quirks acquired over the decades but we got some images off it! Our favourite is below. The camera could have done with a good clean and scratched the film as it went through (those are all the blue lines) and it leaked light leaving a red glow to the edges of the frame. But knowing this came out of great-granddad's camera approaching 90 years old makes up for all of that and we're sure Anna appreciates all the efforts too!
