Intimate York Elopements | Grays Court Wedding Photographer.

If you’re looking for venues suited to intimate York elopements that have a touch of class, plenty of history, and a beautiful private setting, then look no further than Grays Court. With a history spanning nearly a thousand years, Grays Court is believed to be the oldest continually occupied building in Britain. It’s the perfect spot for an intimate ceremony with just your closest and most important guests. Intimate weddings are typically held in the library but there are options for larger gatherings, including the use of the stunning gardens for outdoor ceremonies. Grays Court really is a fantastically flexible wedding venue for intimate York elopements, right up to lavish celebrations.

A York Wedding Venue for All-Seasons

No matter the weather, Grays Court offers multiple options for intimate wedding ceremonies. It makes it the perfect York city centre wedding venue for all seasons throughout the year. The library can comfortably hold your most treasured people and provides a relaxed beautiful setting for micro-weddings. It looks great at any time of year with its large windows, supplemented by elegant lighting. Outside, Grays Court has a secret but extremely generously sized garden bordered by the city walls. It’s a glorious sun trap surrounded by beautiful historic architecture, a unique wedding venue offering for York. But to really show off how versatile this wedding venue is for elopements in York, let’s look at two weddings, one in summer, the other in winter.

A Summer Wedding at Grays Court

Keeley and Tom got married at an intimate York wedding ceremony at Grays Court in July 2026. They chose the library for their micro-wedding with just four guests with others joining for the drinks reception later. The library is elegant and beautifully styled, a perfect spot for a low-key wedding ceremony. After their ceremony, conducted by York Register Office registrars, the couple had a confetti shower down the stairs into the garden before enjoying a drinks reception in the private gardens. We made time for a wonderful portrait shoot in the greenery of both the walled garden and the working gardens which are separated by a driveway with fantastic views of York Minster. It’s a real treat to have so many options for wedding portraits right on the doorstep at a York city centre wedding venue.

A Winter Wedding at Grays Court

Rachel and Iain got married in an intimate late November wedding in 2025. It was a beautiful time of year straddling late autumn and early winter. Rachel leaned into the season with her deep crimson wedding dress, perfect for the transitioning seasons. The library looked beautiful as always for their ceremony with just four guests, comfortably spectating from the sofas. After the ceremony, the couple enjoyed a drinks reception in the comfort and warmth of the hotel before Rachel and Iain took to the streets for their portrait session. The gardens look fantastic in the winter, just as they do in the summer. The planting maintains structure and interest throughout the cold seasons and is still the perfect spot for portraits. We took a stroll around the Minster for more photos which was bathed in low winter light, glowing in the background and perfectly complementing Rachel’s dress.

Whether you’re planning a summer, winter, autumn or spring wedding at Grays Court, I’ll be able to capture it at it’s best no matter what the season.
