Charlotte & Jack | Relaxed Thirsk Lodge Barns Wedding Photographer.

One of the most common questions I get asked before a wedding as a photographer, is ‘what happens if it rains?’ Well, even if you book your wedding in July, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get good weather. So it’s a good idea to plan for a wet weather wedding, especially in drizzly Yorkshire! When Charlotte and Jack asked me to be their Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding photographer, we kinda all expected a sunny summer wedding. What we got was practically every season of weather in all one day!

A Rustic North Yorkshire Setting: Celebrating at Thirsk Lodge Barns

Charlotte and Jack’s vision for their wedding day was a relaxed wedding in a beautiful Yorkshire setting that could comfortably accommodate all their friends and family. Thirsk Lodge Barns (which features in my list of top barn wedding venues in Yorkshire) fit the bill. Thirsk Lodge Barns is situated in a rustic North Yorkshire setting. The beautiful Georgian farmhouse sets the tone for morning preparations. The farmhouse is the perfect space for having all the most important people in one place whilst making sure everyone has their own space. Its an elegant place for morning preparations too with huge windows and a cosy vibe.

An Atmospheric Ceremony in the Main Barn

Whilst Charlotte got ready in the main farmhouse, Jack got ready in the Laundry Cottage. I love a venue that has separate preparation spaces and accommodation but are super close by. It means I can capture both sides of the morning, building a story of how you come together for the ceremony. Speaking of the ceremony, the main barn is a gorgeous brick building with plenty of rustic charm. The main barn is spacious and accommodates everyone you could possibly want, but still feels intimate and relaxed. Charlotte and Jack opted for simple white flower decorations with plenty of foliage. They let the charm of the barn go unspoiled and set the scene for an atmospheric ceremony.

What Happens if it Rains on our Wedding Day?

Wind and rain aren’t ideal for outdoor photos – I can’t lie about that! But Thirsk Lodge Barns is fantastic for indoor wet weather weddings. Whether you want a backup plan if it does rain on your wedding day, or you’re having a winter wedding, Thirsk Lodge Barns is super versatile. It makes the job of photography easy by having so many dedicated rooms to different parts of the day. It means you can still have intimate wedding portraits in the main barn, whilst guests enjoy drinks in the bar. There’s also plenty of covered archways and sheltered space around the farm. And when the rain did stop, we rushed out to get photos in the wheat field. The break in the weather didn’t hold and we rushed back in, but we’d be back.

The beauty of having a photographer like me who doesn’t have a time limit on the day is that I can be adaptable. I’m not the type of photographer who rushes off. I keep track of when there’s going to be another break in the weather. Later in the evening Charlotte, Jack and I took advantage of a brief window wjoch meant we could get back out into the field. I’m so glad we made time for this. The happiness and joy in the photos is so evident, and worth the wait. Yes, we got lots of genuinely stunning photos indoors but the photos in the field were the icing on the cake.

I’m an experienced photographer who has shot at Thirsk Lodge Barns a number of times. I know all the best spots for photos whatever the weather. If you’re looking for a Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding photographer, get in touch to check my availability.
